Nigeria’s electricity sector continues to face operational challenges as three power plants recorded zero electricity generation in September, while the national grid experienced persistent frequency and voltage violations, according to data from the
Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The affected plants — Alaoji 1, Ibom Power 1 and Rivers 1 — recorded no available generation capacity during the month.
Average electricity generation stood at 4,089 megawatts, against an available capacity of 5,038MW.
The development comes amid concerns over the reliability of electricity supply to households and businesses across the country.
Speaking on the challenges facing the sector, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe said:
“These problems reinforce one another. Unpaid bills weaken gas supply and maintenance; unreliable supply depresses collections; poor collections deepen debt. A new power station cannot, by itself, resolve that cycle.”
The minister added:
“Sustainable improvement requires us to repair the physical system and the commercial relationships that keep it functioning.”
He identified damaged gas pipelines, ageing generating equipment, transmission constraints and poor revenue collection as major obstacles to improved electricity supply. The latest figures underscore the need for improved plant availability, reliable gas supply and stronger transmission infrastructure.
