Energy Minister Calls for Stronger Regional Power Integration at West Africa Energy Cooperation Summit

Energy Minister John Jinapor has underscored the urgency of deepening regional power integration to secure a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy future for West Africa.

Speaking at the West Africa Energy Cooperation Summit in Accra, the Minister urged countries in the sub-region to transition from isolated national energy systems toward stronger interconnections and increased investment in renewable energy and shared infrastructure.

He commended the West African Power Pool (WAPP) for the successful synchronization of the power grids of Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria an achievement he said provides critical data that will support the development of a permanent regional power market strategy.

Mr. Jinapor also called for closer alignment between the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Single Electricity Market (ASEM) to facilitate cross-border energy infrastructure and harmonized regulatory frameworks.

He further encouraged member states to prioritize regional investment planning, adopt standardized grid codes and develop bankable power purchase agreements (PPAs) to enhance efficiency and unlock scale across the electricity value chain.
