Foreign Affairs Ministry, Nuclear Power Ghana Strengthen Collaboration on Energy Diplomacy

Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG) has briefed the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, on ongoing efforts to advance Ghana’s nuclear energy programme for peaceful and civilian purposes.

The engagement took place on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, when a delegation led by NPG’s Executive Director, Dr. Stephen Yamoah, paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister at the Ministry.

The team outlined progress toward integrating nuclear power into Ghana’s energy mix to enhance electricity generation and bolster long-term energy security. Key milestones highlighted included site assessments, community engagement, vendor technology selection, capacity building, infrastructure development and regulatory compliance to ensure safety.

The delegation also discussed plans for grid integration and the potential export of surplus power through the West African Power Pool (WAPP), positioning Ghana as a prospective nuclear energy hub in the sub-region.

In his remarks, Mr. Quayson commended NPG for its structured and strategic approach to programme implementation. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology in line with Ghana’s international obligations.

He further emphasised the need for strict adherence to global safety standards and enhanced collaboration among state institutions and international partners to advance Ghana’s nuclear energy agenda.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen cooperation as Ghana progresses toward deploying nuclear power as part of its long-term energy strategy.
