Ghana, Nigeria Weigh Barter Deal: Electricity for Gas

Ghana is in talks with Nigeria over a potential barter arrangement that would see electricity exported in exchange for gas, Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor has disclosed.

Speaking at the Future Energy Conference (FEC) organised by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Mr. Jinapor said the initiative could enhance regional energy security while deepening integration under the West Africa Power Pool.

“We currently supply power to Togo, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Benin. The next step is to scale this cooperation further. With Nigeria, the idea is simple we take their gas, generate electricity, and then re-export that power back to them. It’s a win-win arrangement underpinned by West African solidarity,” he explained.

He further highlighted that Ghana’s nuclear power programme remains central to building a reliable baseload for long-term resilience and cost-effectiveness.

The FEC, ACEP’s flagship annual event, brings together policymakers, investors, academics and civil society to deliberate on governance, innovation and financing to close Africa’s energy access gap. This year’s theme, “Financing Africa’s Energy Future: Unlocking Investments for Energy Access and Economic Transformation”, focused on mobilising capital for energy transition and tackling energy poverty across the continent.
