Accra, Ghana – July 11, 2025 — Ghana’s electricity demand is climbing steadily, driven by rapid population growth, industrial expansion, and increasing nationwide access to electricity. This trend underscores a pressing need for sustained investment in energy infrastructure, according to the Ghana Energy Outlook Report 2025.
The report reveals that total electricity consumption reached 22,410 GWh by November 2024, representing a 4.6% increase over the same period in 2023. By year-end, consumption is expected to hit 24,688 GWh—up 4.8% from the previous year’s 23,551 GWh.
Looking ahead, Ghana’s electricity demand is projected to rise by another 4.7% in 2025 to 25,836 GWh. The forecast includes a 95% confidence interval ranging from 23,275 GWh to 28,382 GWh, underscoring both the country’s growing energy appetite and the challenges in predicting future load requirements.
“This consistent growth in demand highlights the need for long-term investment in power infrastructure, system efficiency, and load forecasting,” the report notes.
Distribution Burden on ECG and NEDCo:
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) remain the country’s primary electricity distributors. ECG alone is forecast to handle 17,561 GWh in 2025—accounting for 68% of national electricity consumption. NEDCo is projected to manage 8.5% of total demand.
Other major electricity consumers include:
- Cross-border exports (Togo/Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso’s SONABEL): 7.6%
- Mining sector: 5.7%
Transmission Losses Remain a Challenge:
Transmission losses—the energy lost between generation and end-user delivery stood at 3.9% (874 GWh) in November 2024, unchanged from the previous year. These losses are projected to rise slightly to 955 GWh in 2025 but will still account for just 3.9% of total transmitted power.
“Maintaining transmission losses under 4% is commendable but will require continued investment in grid infrastructure to keep up with demand growth,” the report states.
Future-Proofing Ghana’s Energy Sector
The Ghana Energy Outlook emphasizes the urgent need for strategic expansion in generation capacity, modernization of grid systems, and a diversified energy mix particularly through clean energy technologies.
Planners are urged to consider urbanization trends, rural electrification goals, and changing industrial demand when formulating energy strategies.
The report also calls for:
- Evidence-based policymaking
- Targeted infrastructure investments
- Advanced forecasting tools
With ECG and NEDCo under increasing pressure to meet demand and minimize losses, the government and private sector face a pivotal moment to align investment, policy, and innovation to safeguard the country’s energy future.
