Government Engages TUC, Utility Stakeholders on Private Sector Participation in Power Distribution

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has held a high-level engagement with the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Public Utilities Workers’ Union (PUWU), the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and representatives of other utility institutions to discuss private sector participation in the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and NEDCo.

The meeting formed part of government’s commitment to continuous stakeholder engagement in addressing challenges within the power sector. Discussions were described as frank and constructive, with a strong focus on data-driven analysis.
Participants acknowledged persistent challenges within the electricity distribution value chain, particularly in billing and revenue collection. Government officials cautioned that failure to address these issues decisively could pose a significant threat to the long-term sustainability of the power sector.

The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to implementing comprehensive measures to resolve the challenges, stressing that the overarching objective is to safeguard the power sector and ensure reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply to households, businesses, and the wider economy.
