Government Showcases Energy Sector Reforms at 9th Ghana Energy Awards

The 9th Ghana Energy Awards, held on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Labadi Beach Hotel, spotlighted Ghana’s ongoing progress in stabilising its power sector while honouring outstanding contributions across the industry. The ceremony, themed “Repositioning the Energy Sector as a Pillar of National Development,” brought together policymakers, international partners, industry experts, and key energy stakeholders.Representing Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, Deputy Minister Richard Gyan Mensah delivered the keynote address, outlining the government’s comprehensive reforms aimed at addressing longstanding issues in the energy value chain. He recalled the December 2024 power crisis, when a 700-megawatt deficit led to nationwide load shedding, disrupting homes and businesses.

“Through targeted reforms across generation, transmission, distribution, and financing, we have restored energy security and supported economic and industrial growth,” he said.Gyan Mensah attributed the improved stability—marked by months of uninterrupted power supply—to enhanced collaboration with Ghana Gas, private sector players, and other critical institutions. He added that the ministry remains committed to consolidating these gains while advancing long-term objectives such as sustainable industrial expansion and a resilient national grid.“The effective management of the energy sector extends beyond infrastructure development to encompass the people, professionals, and investors driving its growth,” he noted. The deputy minister highlighted several major initiatives undertaken by government, including the installation of more than 200 megawatts of solar capacity, expansion of mini-grid systems serving communities in Ada, the nationwide deployment of smart solar streetlights, and continued progress towards Ghana’s nuclear energy agenda. He further pointed to financial reforms—especially the strengthening of the Petroleum Commission’s Local Content Fund—as measures designed to boost local participation in the oil and gas sector.Kwame Jantuah, Chairman of the Awarding Panel, underscored the importance of independent platforms like the Ghana Energy Awards in evaluating sector performance and promoting innovation.“These awards help maintain accountability and encourage excellence within the sector,” he stated. The 2025 edition recognised winners across 26 competitive and six honorary categories, including new awards honouring reform-driven leadership, operational excellence, and rising female talent in the industry. The event also drew international attention.
