The widening regional war of Israel and United States attacks on Iran is beginning to ripple through global energy markets, raising concerns in United Kingdom over declining fossil gas reserves.
Figures from National Gas show Britain currently holds 6,999 gigawatt hours of gas, down from 9,105 GWh a year earlier. While the country’s maximum storage capacity equals roughly 12 days of supply, current reserves amount to less than two days, sparking fears that an escalating Middle East crisis could strain energy availability.
The situation has been worsened by liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers diverting away from Europe toward Asia as global markets react to the war. Several shipments changed course in the Atlantic in recent days amid rising prices and supply uncertainty.
