Monrovia, Liberia.
The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) management team, led by Managing Director Hon. Mohammed M. Sherif, has undertaken a high-level tour of key energy projects aimed at boosting electricity supply and improving national infrastructure.
The inspection began with a progress meeting with International Consolidated Contractors Offshore SAL (ICCO), the firm building Liberia’s first utility-scale 20MW solar power plant. The project, launched in October 2024 by President Joseph N. Boakai, is scheduled for commissioning in November 2025.
At the construction site, ICCO Project Manager Salim Nasr reported that steel structure installation is underway and will soon be followed by solar panel mounting. About 430 people are currently employed on the project, with women making up 30% of the workforce. Additional equipment and materials have recently arrived and are being cleared at the Freeport of Monrovia.
Hon. Sherif stressed that the commissioning deadline is “firm and non-negotiable,” noting the solar plant will significantly enhance energy capacity during the dry season and strengthen electricity stability nationwide.
The delegation also visited the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant, where repair works on Unit #1a 22MW turbine offline since July 2021—are progressing through the disassembly phase.
The tour concluded in Brewerville, Montserrado County, where electrification works under the World Bank–funded Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Project (LESSAP) are extending power to over 30 communities.
Hon. Sherif expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and reaffirmed LEC’s commitment to fulfilling the energy component of the ARREST Agenda. He also thanked President Boakai for his continued support.
