Tema Oil Refinery Receives 950,000 Barrels of Sankofa Crude in Landmark GNPC Partnership

The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has received 950,000 barrels of light sweet crude oil from Ghana’s Sankofa-Gye Nyame Field in a landmark supply arrangement with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

The crude, produced from the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) block and supplied through GNPC, is expected to be processed at TOR into petroleum products for the Ghanaian market.

The shipment marks the first time a Ghanaian refinery has received a cargo of crude from the Sankofa Field for refining, according to TOR management. The development is being viewed as a significant step in efforts to strengthen domestic refining capacity, support local crude production and enhance Ghana’s energy security.

The arrangement also forms part of efforts to strengthen the link between Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector and its midstream and downstream industries, with the objective of adding and retaining more value from the country’s petroleum resources within the domestic economy.

The Managing Director of TOR Edmund Kombat said the partnership with GNPC demonstrates the potential for greater cooperation between upstream and downstream operators to improve crude supply, support refinery operations and create additional value from Ghana’s petroleum resources.

He said the Sankofa crude supply provides TOR with an opportunity to strengthen its operations while contributing to the broader development of a resilient and sustainable petroleum industry.

The development also underscores the potential of using Ghana’s indigenous crude resources to support local refining, deepen cooperation across the petroleum value chain and retain more economic value domestically.

TOR and GNPC are also discussing opportunities to expand their collaboration beyond the current crude supply arrangement.

GNPC Chief Executive Kwame Ntow Amoah said the commercial arrangement creates a local market for Ghana’s upstream production and provides scope for the relationship to expand as production increases and opportunities emerge within the corporation’s existing supply commitments.

VHe said GNPC also sees opportunities to deepen its partnership with TOR beyond the supply of crude oil.

TOR management expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, Energy Minister Dr John Abdulai Jinapor and the leadership and management of GNPC for their support and collaboration.

The refinery also acknowledged its tolling partners, Fujairah and Triangle Commodities Trading (TCT), for their continued support and commitment to its operations.

The receipt of the Sankofa crude marks a new commercial relationship between GNPC and TOR, with both institutions indicating that there is scope for further collaboration across Ghana’s petroleum value chain.
