As part of its Green4Clean Schools Renewable Energy Project, Vivo Energy Ghana, the exclusive Shell licensee in the country, has teamed up with McKingtorch Africa, a climate-focused social enterprise and United Way Ghana to engage schoolchildren in environmental sustainability through a practical learning experience.
The initiative saw pupils from La Enobal Basic School embark on an educational tour of McKingtorch Africa’s recycling facility. The aim was to ignite early awareness of climate issues and showcase the potential of recycling, particularly how plastic waste can be innovatively transformed into valuable, everyday items.
During the visit, students, accompanied by teachers and representatives from Vivo Energy Ghana, witnessed firsthand how discarded plastic is repurposed into durable products such as school desks, chairs, clocks, sandals, and more. The immersive experience not only brought the concepts of circular economy and environmental responsibility to life but also highlighted the role of innovation in addressing the global waste challenge.
To support McKingtorch Africa’s mission, Vivo Energy Ghana purchased school desks made entirely from recycled plastic, which will be donated to underserved public schools as part of its commitment to sustainability and inclusive education.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Christian Li, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to environmental protection and youth empowerment.
“Our partnership with McKingtorch Africa is a testament to our belief that sustainability begins with education and innovation. By exposing young learners to practical recycling solutions, we’re empowering them to be the next generation of environmental champions. This initiative also aligns with our contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 – Quality Education and Goal 13 – Climate Action,” said Mr. Li.
Makafui Awuku, CEO and Founder of McKingtorch Africa, expressed appreciation for the support:
“We’re thankful to Vivo Energy Ghana for believing in our mission. Their patronage helps us expand our impact and demonstrates to young people that waste can be a resource for creativity and change. We look forward to deepening our collaboration and advancing environmental innovation together.”
The tour also opened discussions for future collaboration between Vivo Energy Ghana and McKingtorch Africa, including expanding recycling and circular economy initiatives at Shell service stations and schools across the country. Both organisations share a vision to promote sustainable infrastructure, environmental literacy, and youth engagement in climate solutions.
This partnership forms part of Vivo Energy Ghana’s broader Green4Clean Schools Project, which integrates renewable energy education, environmental awareness, and community innovation to equip schoolchildren with the tools and mindset needed for a greener future.
Vivo Energy Ghana continues to demonstrate its commitment to long-term, impactful contributions that benefit both people and the planet.
