GRIDCo Staff Receive Training in Renewable Energy Financial Modelling

Tema, Ghana
Staff of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) recently benefited from a comprehensive training programme on the economics and financial modelling of variable renewable energy (VRE) systems, aimed at enhancing the company’s capacity to support Ghana’s clean energy transition.

The intensive workshop, held in Tema, was facilitated by energy economist and consultant Dr. Theo Acheampong. The sessions combined theoretical instruction with hands-on Microsoft Excel-based modelling exercises, equipping participants with practical tools to assess and manage renewable energy investments.

Key topics covered during the training included:

  • Capital budgeting and cash flow modelling for VRE projects
  • Financing structures and the complexities of Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC)
  • Tax depreciation, loss carry-forwards, and investment uplifts
  • Sensitivity and scenario analysis techniques, including Monte Carlo simulations
  • Estimating levelised costs and key financial metrics for grid extension projects
  • Economics of energy storage solutions
  • Tariff structures and pricing mechanisms
  • Project risk assessment and mitigation strategies

The training was made possible through support from the Green Cities, Infrastructure and Energy Programme (CGIEP), funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to build technical expertise within Ghana’s energy sector and to advance the integration of sustainable and resilient power systems.
