Africa Must Take Charge of Its Energy Future” – Ghana’s Energy Minister Sets Tone for Africa Oil Week 2025

Ghana’s Minister for Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has declared that “Africa must take charge of its energy future,” as the country prepares to host Africa Oil Week (AOW) 2025 in Accra from 15–18 September at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City.

The event, regarded as Africa’s premier upstream oil and gas gathering, will convene Energy Ministers, National Oil Companies (NOCs), regulators, and global investors to chart a unified path for the continent’s energy development.

“We are at a pivotal moment in the global energy landscape,” Minister Jinapor said. “Ghana is proud to host AOW 2025 and lead discussions on how Africa can secure investment, accelerate upstream production, and embrace decarbonization technologies. This is not just about Ghana—it’s about Africa taking its place as a global energy leader.”

Ghana at the Forefront

As host, Ghana will showcase its new upstream strategy, focused on investor-friendly regulations, exploration incentives, and improved geological data. The National Showcase will highlight opportunities in the Keta and Voltaian basins while unveiling new production targets aimed at boosting output beyond the current 120,000–130,000 barrels per day.

These plans align with Ghana’s ambition to position itself as West Africa’s leading hub for upstream investment.

A Strategic Continental Platform

A key highlight of AOW 2025 will be the 7th APPO NOC CEO Meeting, hosted in partnership with the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) and GNPC. This forum will bring together the heads of Africa’s NOCs to advance collaboration on licensing rounds, energy security, and regional partnerships.

Edward Bawa, CEO of Goil praised Jinapor’s leadership in steering Ghana’s role in Africa’s energy transition, while Paul Sinclair, CEO of AOW: Energy, highlighted record interest in the Accra event, describing it as “a new chapter of upstream growth with Ghana at the center.”
