Energy Minister Petitions IGP Over Assault on Ministry Staff at Kasoa

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to request a full and impartial investigation into an attack on staff of the Ministry that occurred while they were commuting to work in an official bus.

The incident reportedly took place at Kasoa Amanfrom on Thursday morning, January 15, 2026.
According to eyewitness accounts, the Ministry’s staff bus, which was travelling from Kasoa to Accra, encountered a pickup truck parked close to the middle of the road, obstructing its exit onto the main road. After the bus managed to join traffic, a staff member reportedly drew the attention of the pickup driver to the improper parking.

Moments later, the pickup truck allegedly pursued the bus and crossed its path at high speed on two occasions, forcing the bus driver to take evasive action. A video circulating from the incident shows occupants of the pickup truck confronting and assaulting some passengers through the windows of the bus before forcing their way onboard and attacking several occupants.
Sources at the Energy Ministry say at least three people, including the bus driver, were assaulted during the incident. One staff member was allegedly dragged off the bus by the assailants, and their whereabouts were, at the time of reporting, unknown.
The Minister has clarified that the individuals involved were personnel of the Ghana Police Service and not officers of National Security, contrary to earlier speculation. Dr. Jinapor described the incident as unacceptable and stressed that no citizen should be subjected to such treatment, particularly by law enforcement officers tasked with protecting lives and upholding the rule of law.
He rejected claims that the assault was provoked by alleged insults from Ministry staff, describing such justification as indefensible and insufficient under any circumstances to warrant violence or abuse of authority.

Dr. Jinapor has called on the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly to ensure accountability, deliver justice to the victims, and restore public confidence in the professionalism and discipline of the Service.
