Ghana Energy Awards opens 10th edition to recognise energy sector excellence

Ghana Energy Awards has opened nominations for its 10th anniversary edition, with 35 award categories introduced to recognise excellence, leadership and innovation across the country’s energy industry.

The milestone edition was launched on September 30 at the Airport View Hotel in Accra under the theme: “Consolidating Ghana’s Energy Sector Gains: A Decade of Resilience, A Future of Sustainable Energy.”

The nominations were opened on behalf of the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, by the Ministry’s Director of Power, Ing. Sulemana Abubakari.

Ing. Abubakari praised the Energy Media Group, organisers of the awards, for sustaining the initiative and providing a platform for recognising contributions to Ghana’s energy sector over the past decade.

In his address, Dr Jinapor described the Ghana Energy Awards as an important platform for celebrating leadership, innovation and contributions to the development of the sector.

He encouraged individuals, institutions and organisations across the energy value chain to submit nominations for the 2026 awards.

New awards introduced

Chairman of the Awarding Panel, lawyer Kwame Jantuah, said the 2026 theme followed extensive deliberations on developments within Ghana’s energy sector over the past decade.

He said stakeholder feedback, sector performance trends and emerging developments were considered in developing the theme.

The panel also consulted the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to ensure that the theme aligned with the sector’s policy direction and aspirations.

Mr Jantuah said the theme was intended not only to reflect the sector’s progress but also to encourage stakeholders to consolidate the gains made and pursue higher standards.

He urged nominees to provide clear evidence of their achievements and impact, assuring participants that the assessment process would be based on fairness, objectivity, transparency and established criteria.

The 10th edition will feature 30 competitive and five non-competitive awards.

Competitive categories include Energy Personality of the Year, CEO of the Year, Energy Company of the Year, Emerging Female Leader in Energy, Upstream Company of the Year, Downstream Company of the Year and the Rising Star Award.

Four new categories have also been introduced to commemorate the 10th anniversary.

They are the Energy Icon of the Decade, Private Sector Impact Leadership Award, Digital Transformation in Energy Award and Outstanding Engineer of the Decade Award.

Digital system to transform awards process

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Energy Awards, Rev. Ing. Henry Teinor, said the 10th edition represented an important milestone in the organisers’ efforts to recognise excellence and promote progress in an industry critical to Ghana’s economic development.

He commended members of the Awarding Panel for their commitment to the scheme over the past 10 years.

A major feature of this year’s edition is the introduction of an Integrated Awards Management System, a digital platform that will manage key stages of the awards process, including nominations, shortlisting, assessment, scoring and validation.

The organisers said the system is the first of its kind among awards schemes in Africa and is expected to make the nomination and evaluation process more structured and traceable.

Rev. Ing. Teinor said the platform would complement the work of the Awards Secretariat, Awarding Panel, technical experts and independent validators while improving efficiency in the assessment process.

He said the organisers would continue to ensure that contributions across the energy sector were identified, assessed and recognised on merit.

Energy outreach reaches 15,000 students

Rev. Ing. Teinor also highlighted the impact of the Energy Personalities Outreach Programme (EPOP), a STEM-focused initiative of the Ghana Energy Awards.

He said the programme had so far reached more than 15,000 Senior High School students nationwide.

According to him, EPOP forms part of the organisers’ broader efforts to inspire and develop the next generation of energy professionals and leaders.

With nominations now open, individuals, institutions and organisations across Ghana’s energy value chain are expected to participate in the 10th anniversary edition. The nomination process will culminate in the main Ghana Energy Awards ceremony later in
