NNPC Urges Increased Investment in Refining, Gas Infrastructure to Strengthen Nigeria’s Energy Security

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has called for increased investment in refining capacity, natural gas infrastructure and petroleum distribution as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its energy security and reduce exposure to disruptions in global energy markets.

The company highlighted the importance of sustained capital investment, public-private partnerships and regional cooperation in addressing structural challenges across Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

The call comes as Africa’s largest oil producer continues to pursue efforts to improve domestic petroleum supply, expand gas utilisation and strengthen its energy infrastructure amid persistent concerns over production capacity and supply-chain efficiency.

Refining and Gas Infrastructure in Focus

Expanding domestic refining capacity remains central to Nigeria’s efforts to reduce its dependence on imported petroleum products and improve the availability of fuel in the domestic market.

Investment in natural gas infrastructure is also considered critical to supporting electricity generation, industrial development and broader economic growth.

However, achieving these objectives will require substantial financing, consistent regulatory policies and effective collaboration between government institutions and private investors.

Investment Key to Long-Term Energy Security

Increased investment could help Nigeria strengthen its domestic energy supply, attract international capital and improve the resilience of its petroleum and gas markets.

Nevertheless, industry stakeholders face the challenge of translating investment commitments into operational infrastructure, higher production and more affordable energy for consumers.
