The Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC) has commended the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for fairly regulating electricity prices, placing customers first by approving only 1.14 percent increase instead of the outrageous 225 percent proposed by the power distribution company ECG.
In a statement signed by the Director of Research and Innovation Dr, Elvis Twumasi, ASEC commended the PURC for the approach adopted in the latest quarterly tariff adjustment and emphasized that tariff adjustment must always follow due process and under no circumstances should the inefficiencies of the ECG be passed unto consumers.
According to the energy think tank, any future tariff increases for ECG should be tied to strict performance benchmarks, particularly in reducing both technical and commercial losses.
The Africa Sustainable Energy Centre concludes by urging the PURC to remain firm on this commendable path, and not to yield to any external pressures that could lead to unjustifiable increases and further much stress on Ghanaians.
