The government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) into a financially sustainable, efficient and customer-focused electricity distribution company.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, made the commitment on behalf of the sector Minister, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, when he addressed the 28th Annual General Meeting of ECG.
Mr Gyan-Mensah described ECG as the backbone of Ghana’s electricity value chain, stressing that a financially strong and efficient utility is critical to ensuring reliable power supply, supporting businesses and industries, and sustaining the country’s broader energy ecosystem.
He highlighted a number of reforms being implemented to strengthen the company’s financial position and operational efficiency, including improved revenue collection, stronger financial discipline, enhanced corporate governance and the implementation of the Cash Waterfall Mechanism.
He also pointed to the establishment of a single revenue account as part of measures to improve transparency, strengthen accountability and minimise revenue leakages within the electricity distribution system.
According to the Deputy Minister, the reforms are beginning to yield encouraging results, although more work remains to be done to fully transform ECG’s operations.
Mr Gyan-Mensah said efforts to modernise ECG’s infrastructure and strengthen its finances must be matched by a corresponding improvement in customer service.
“Every Ghanaian deserves reliable electricity, responsive service, and a utility that operates with professionalism, accountability, and integrity,” he said.
He said the government’s vision is to build an ECG that is financially robust, operationally efficient and customer-centred, while positioning the company among Africa’s leading electricity distribution utilities.
The Deputy Minister assured Ghanaians that government would continue to work with ECG to implement reforms aimed at improving service delivery and ensuring a more resilient and sustainable electricity sector.
