Nigeria Introduces 30-Day Fuel Price Relief as Cost Pressures Mount.

Nigeria Introduces 30-Day Fuel Price Relief as Cost Pressures Mount.

Abuja _Thursday October 8th 2026

The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol dispensed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), with public transport operators set to receive priority under the temporary measure.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed the measure while addressing the issue of rising petrol prices and its impact on Nigerians.

Oyedele said the initiative is not a return to the fuel subsidy regime, stressing that the government is instead asking NNPCL to make petrol available at cost during the 30-day period.

“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC Limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide. So, it’s not a subsidy, government is just saying we sell to you at cost.”

According to the minister, the temporary intervention is intended to provide relief to Nigerians, particularly commuters who have been affected by the rising cost of transportation following increases in petrol prices.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the impact of fuel prices on transportation costs, household expenses and business operations across the country.

The Federal Government maintains that the arrangement should not be interpreted as a return to the petrol subsidy system, which was removed under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The development will be closely watched by consumers and transport operators as the government begins implementation of the 30-day measure and assesses its impact on petrol prices and transportation costs nationwide.
