The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has inspected the progress of the Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade (K1–K2 Project) in the Ashanti Region, describing the initiative as a major investment aimed at strengthening electricity supply in Kumasi and across the wider Ashanti Region.
The project involves replacing the existing 19-kilometre single-circuit 364MVA transmission line with a modern double-circuit line with a total capacity of 978MVA (2x488MVA), more than doubling the current transmission capacity.
As part of the upgrade, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) will also replace one of the transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation, increasing its capacity from 66MVA to 145MVA to improve the reliability, stability and resilience of electricity supply.
According to the Minister, the project is entering its final phase of construction from Monday, July 20, 2026. During this period, some customers may experience temporary and localised power interruptions to enable the safe execution of the remaining works.
Dr. Jinapor explained that the planned outages are necessary to deliver a stronger and more reliable electricity transmission network capable of supporting the growing energy needs of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.
He appealed to residents and businesses to exercise patience during the construction period, assuring them that GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would work to minimise disruptions and restore power as quickly as possible.
The Minister also expressed appreciation to the people of Kumasi for their patience, understanding and continued support as government undertakes critical infrastructure investments to improve power supply in the region.
