China’s Clean Energy Capacity Hits 2.46 Billion kW as Solar Overtakes Coal

China has built the world’s largest and most comprehensive clean energy industrial chain, with green and low-carbon industries emerging as a major driver of economic growth, according to a vice minister of ecology and environment.
The official made the remarks on Wednesday, highlighting the country’s progress in renewable energy development, nuclear power and the production of new energy vehicles.
By the first half of 2026, China’s total installed renewable energy capacity had reached 2.46 billion kilowatts (kW), representing 60.7 per cent of the country’s total installed power generation capacity.

The country also recorded a major milestone in its energy transition at the end of July, when installed solar power capacity surpassed coal-fired power capacity for the first time, making solar the largest single power source in China by installed capacity.
China has also strengthened its position in nuclear energy, with its combined installed capacity of operational and approved nuclear power units rising to the highest level globally.
In the transport sector, the country has maintained its dominance in the new energy vehicle market, ranking first worldwide in vehicle production and sales for 11 consecutive years.

The developments underscore China’s expanding clean energy industry and its efforts to accelerate the transition towards a greener, low-carbon economy while supporting economic growth and energy security.
