LIBERIA RURAL RENEWABLE ENERGY AGENCY (RREA) SIGNS CONTRACTS TO SOLARIZE 121 MORE HEALTH AND EDUCATION FACILITIES.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA

Liberia’s Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) has signed contracts to provide solar electricity to 121 additional public health and education facilities across the country.

The project, under Phase Two of the Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening Access Project, known as LESSAP II, will target 87 public health facilities and 34 senior high schools.

The initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to expand access to reliable electricity and achieve its national electrification targets by 2030.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, LESSAP II Project Coordinator Theophilus A. T. Kambo disclosed that approximately 4.67 million US dollars has been allocated for the project.

He said 3.58 million dollars would be spent on solarizing the additional health facilities, while 1.09 million dollars has been allocated for the senior high schools.

The project will involve the supply, installation and commissioning of stand-alone solar photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage facilities.

It will also include remote monitoring, staff training, and operation and maintenance services to support the long-term sustainability of the installations.

The contract has been awarded to a joint venture between MBH Power Limited and JIVO Energy Private Limited, with RREA serving as the implementing agency.

RREA Executive Director Samuel Nagbe has urged the contractors to complete the project on time and comply fully with the terms of their contracts.

Mr. Nagbe warned that delays would not be acceptable, stressing that communities across Liberia deserve to benefit from the government’s investment in rural electrification.

He also said the implementation approach used during the first phase, which provided solar electricity to 90 health facilities, would be applied to the second phase.

The RREA Executive Director further emphasized the need for effective monitoring, compliance with environmental safeguards, and the participation of local contractors and Liberian citizens.

For their part, representatives of the joint venture pledged their commitment to delivering the project successfully.

The LESSAP II project is financed through a World Bank loan to the Government of Liberia and implemented by RREA.

The initiative is expected to strengthen healthcare and education services by providing a more reliable electricity supply, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
