Ambassador Tong: China Ready to Support Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Through Solar Energy Collaboration

China has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Africa’s green energy transition, with a strong focus on solar energy development. Speaking on the sidelines of the maiden Ghana-China Media Fellowship 2025 in Accra, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, said China stands ready to partner with African countries as they work toward achieving their energy transition goals.

“The climate conversation is a major issue for many African nations,” Ambassador Tong said in an interview with EnergyCrossroad.com. “As a global leader in solar energy development, China is willing to help Africa tap into its abundant solar resources to drive green energy technologies and sustainable development.”

The Ghana-China Media Fellowship is an initiative of the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advisory (ACCPA), bringing together journalists and media professionals to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between the two countries.

Ambassador Tong highlighted solar energy as a key pillar of China-Africa energy cooperation, especially under the framework of the China-Africa Energy Cooperation Agreement and the Energy Transition Action Plan. He urged African countries to prioritize investment in renewable energy sources, including solar, to power their economies and promote inclusive growth.

Touching on Ghana’s new “24-Hour Economy” policy, the Ambassador emphasized the need for robust energy provision to support such an initiative. He noted that renewable energy particularly solar presents a viable and sustainable solution to meet the increased energy demand.

“China is already heavily invested in Ghana’s infrastructure and energy sectors. The renewable energy space is the next frontier for deepened cooperation between our two nations,” he added.

Ambassador Tong expressed optimism about the future of China-Ghana energy relations, stating that collaborative efforts in solar energy development would not only support Ghana’s green transition but also unlock new economic opportunities across the continent.
