Energy Minister Opens IEA Africa Energy Efficiency Training in Accra

Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has underscored the country’s strong progress in energy efficiency initiatives, as he delivered the welcome and opening address at the International Energy Agency (IEA) Africa Energy Efficiency Policy Training Week, held in Accra.

Mr. Jinapor warmly welcomed participants from across Africa and beyond, commending the IEA and the African Development Bank (AfDB) for their continued collaboration in promoting sustainable energy systems across the continent.

He outlined Ghana’s achievements in advancing energy efficiency, highlighting measurable impacts including:

-400 GWh of electricity saved through efficient refrigeration;

-124 MW peak load reduction from efficient lighting;

-47.9% of households now using LPG; and

-1.6 million tonnes of firewood saved annually through improved cookstoves.

“These milestones show that targeted energy efficiency policies can deliver lasting economic, environmental, and social benefits,” the Minister said.

He further noted that Ghana’s broader Energy Transition Strategy places efficiency at the heart of the nation’s drive toward a cleaner and more resilient future.

The IEA Africa Energy Efficiency Policy Training Week brings together policymakers, technical experts, and energy practitioners from across the continent to strengthen capacity and promote knowledge sharing on energy efficiency best practices.

Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with international partners to advance sustainable energy development, saying, “Together, we are strengthening Africa’s capacity to build sustainable energy systems that work for our people and our planet.
