The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) International Board has paid a courtesy call on the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) during its first-quarter 2026 Board meeting held in Japan.
During the visit, JOGMEC, a major institution in Japan’s energy sector, delivered a high-level briefing to the Board on its mandate, operations and the country’s broader energy landscape. The organization outlined how its oil and gas business units support Japan’s stable energy supply while also advancing carbon neutrality through technical and strategic interventions.
The presentation underscored Japan’s heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels, with most of its crude oil and natural gas sourced from overseas. In 2023, fossil fuels accounted for 80.8 per cent of Japan’s energy mix, comprising oil at 35.6 per cent, coal at 24.5 per cent and liquefied natural gas (LNG) at 20.7 per cent.
Beyond the courtesy engagement, the SPE International Board meeting focused on a review of the Society’s long-term strategic plan, with particular attention to membership growth and the continuous enhancement of SPE programmes and events.
The Board also announced that the next SPE International Board meeting will be hosted by the SPE Africa Region in July. The meeting will coincide with the SPE Annual Student Congress and a dedicated geothermal workshop, combining leadership deliberations, student engagement and technical knowledge exchange in a single, intensive week. In attendance was the CEO of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies COMAC who is also the SPE Africa Regional Director Dr. Riverson Oppong-
