The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has commended the management and staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for their efforts in driving reforms and improving efficiency across the power distribution chain.
The commendation came during an official working visit to the ECG as part of the Minister’s supervisory role over agencies under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition. The visit focused on engaging staff, assessing ongoing challenges, and reaffirming government’s commitment to supporting the company’s transformation agenda.
Mr. Jinapor praised the ECG management team, led by Ing. Julius Kpekpena, for significant progress in procurement, maintenance, revenue mobilization, and strategic planning. He revealed that one of the company’s major achievements has been the review of 347 legacy contracts, of which 202 have been terminated, resulting in savings of about US$300 million for the Ghanaian taxpayer.
The Minister underscored the need for collective accountability and integrity within the energy sector, stressing that malpractices would not be tolerated.
“Any staff involved in malfeasance — whether through the unauthorised sale of meters or diversion of revenue — will be held fully accountable,” he cautioned. “There will be no shielding, no special treatment, and no exceptions.”
Mr. Jinapor emphasized that the government is determined not only to address inherited challenges but also to implement bold reforms to ensure long-term stability in Ghana’s energy sector.
He reaffirmed his full support for ECG’s operations and urged the staff to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to delivering efficient and transparent service to Ghanaians.
“This government is not only fixing what it inherited, but also making bold corrections to secure the sector’s future,” he said.
The Minister concluded by reiterating that ECG remains a critical component of Ghana’s energy value chain, and the government will continue to provide the necessary support to enhance its operational capacity and public trust.
