Energy Minister Inspects Akosombo Substation After Fire Outbreak, Orders Urgent Power Restoration

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, on Thursday morning visited the Akosombo Substation following a fire outbreak that severely damaged the facility.

The Minister, accompanied by his Deputy Minister and officials from the Ministry, toured the site to assess the extent of damage and receive firsthand briefings on the incident.

According to Dr Jinapor, the fire had a devastating impact, completely gutting the substation’s control room.

He disclosed that engineers from GRIDCo and Volta River Authority have been working since Wednesday night to contain the situation and restore power supply.

Dr Jinapor said he has directed that all restoration efforts be treated as a matter of utmost urgency due to the seriousness of the incident and its implications for the country’s electricity supply.

He appealed to Ghanaians to remain patient as engineers across the power sector continue efforts to restore electricity to affected areas.

Meanwhile, a seven-member committee chaired by Ing. William Amuna has been set up to conduct an independent investigation into the cause of the fire.

The committee includes representatives from the Energy Commission, National Security, Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, Ghana National Fire Service, Volta River Authority and GRIDCo.

The committee has been given 14 days to submit its report.

Dr Jinapor assured the public that government would move swiftly to address the challenge and maintain stability in the country’s power supply.
