Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has commended Cenpower Generation Company for its contribution to Ghana’s electricity supply and national development as the company marks 10 years since construction began on the Kpone Independent Power Plant (KIPP).
She congratulated the company’s Board, Management, employees and partners, acknowledging their role in supporting reliable electricity generation, industrial growth, job creation and economic development.
The Vice President described the Kpone Independent Power Plant as a landmark infrastructure project, being Ghana’s first greenfield independent power project developed through project financing.
She said the project demonstrates the capacity of Ghanaian businesses, technical expertise and strategic partnerships to deliver major infrastructure investments.
She also highlighted the plant’s ability to operate on multiple fuel sources, noting that this provides flexibility and strengthens resilience in electricity generation.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said government was making concerted efforts to address financial challenges in the energy sector, including settling outstanding obligations and renegotiating agreements to improve the sector’s long-term sustainability.
She stressed that beyond expanding generation capacity, government remained committed to ensuring that electricity was reliable, affordable and accessible, particularly for underserved communities.
According to her, a sustainable and dependable energy system is critical to achieving government’s broader development objectives, including infrastructure expansion, industrialisation and the implementation of the 24-Hour Economy initiative.
She noted that these programmes require a reliable electricity supply capable of supporting businesses, sustaining production and creating employment opportunities.
The Vice President also praised Cenpower for its contributions to communities surrounding its operations, particularly environmental clean-up initiatives and support for local educational institutions.
She encouraged the company to deepen its engagement with host communities while maintaining high standards of operational efficiency, environmental responsibility and workplace safety.
The milestone marks a decade of progress in the development of the Kpone Independent Power Plant and highlights the role of private-sector investment in strengthening Ghana’s power generation capacity.
