Ghana Boosts Domestic Gas Supply in Strategic Move with ENI*

Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced a significant enhancement to the country’s natural gas output, following a new agreement with Italian energy major ENI. The deal will see ENI increase gas production by 30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), raising total supply to 270 MMscfd starting Sunday, July 13, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry on Wednesday, July 9, the increase forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s domestic energy infrastructure. As part of the plan, ENI will temporarily suspend gas exports in order to prioritise local demand—particularly for electricity generation and industrial use.

“This temporary measure is essential for optimising the supply chain and ensuring the successful implementation of the supply increase,” the Ministry said, acknowledging the potential short-term impact on power generation.

To minimise disruptions, the Ministry said it is coordinating with stakeholders in the energy sector to maintain grid stability and ensure continuity of supply.

“We have proactively implemented comprehensive measures to mitigate any potential disruptions,” the statement added.

The move marks a key step in Ghana’s broader energy transition agenda, with the Ministry positioning increased domestic gas utilisation as a cornerstone for a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
