Goodbye to NEOM — Saudi Arabia unveils biggest Hydrogen City in history with 400,000 tons annually

Saudi Arabia recently announced its intention to build a massive green hydrogen plant in Yanbu, a project that will be nearly twice the size of the NEOM green hydrogen facility, with the potential to produce 400,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This move is a component of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to become a global leader in hydrogen exports, leveraging the Yanbu project’s large-scale production of green hydrogen, which will be converted into green ammonia and exported. The project is a partnership between ACWA Power and ENBW and will be powered by solar and wind farms, ensuring the hydrogen produced is truly green.

Key Details
Location: The project will be located in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.
Capacity: It will feature a 4 GW electrolysis capacity, producing up to 400,000 tons of green hydrogen per year.
Product: The hydrogen will be processed into green ammonia for export.
Power Source: The facility will be powered by solar and wind farms, generating truly green hydrogen.
Partners: The project is a collaboration between ACWA Power and Germany’s ENBW.
Strategic Goal: This initiative supports Saudi Arabia’s ambition to capture a significant share of the global hydrogen export market.

Comparison with NEOM
The Yanbu project is positioned to be nearly twice the size of the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project.
The NEOM project, a joint venture between NEOM, ACWA Power, and Air Products, is also developing a major green hydrogen facility.
This new Yanbu hub reinforces Saudi Arabia’s commitment to large-scale green ammonia production and its goal to lead the global clean energy transition.
